Why Independence Matters as We Age

What does it truly mean to be independent? At its core, independence means having the freedom to live life on your own terms, choosing when to wake up, what to eat, where to go, and how to get there without relying on others. 

One of the most common fears among older adults is the loss of autonomy. 

As health needs evolve, older adults are often told things such as they need a walker, must move into assisted living, or require someone else to manage their medications. Piece by piece, these changes can feel like an erosion of their identity and dignity. The loss of independence can often lead to the feeling that quality of life is deeply compromised.
